The social success program at Damselfly
Center is for children and youth with social skill difficulties
seeking to increase social and emotional well-being. This
program targets social skill development through a group process,
which gives children ages 4-16, an opportunity to build on-going
relationships with others in order to promote generalization.
The creative arts therapies - dance/movement,
art, music, drama and play therapy, provide a context for teaching
skill development in a manner that is non-threatening while fostering
multi-dimensional and multi-sensory learning. For example, through
dance/movement therapy we explore body language, impulse control,
spatial awareness, emotional states and how these factors impact
friendships. The arts are engaging and easily captivate children's
attention and focus. Therefore, this program provides a fun and
safe environment for kids challenged with social difficulties
to experience social success. The overall goal is for group members
to become a "team", with each member being accountable to one
another for choosing skill building activities during the sessions.
The philosophy of Amazing Kids T is strength-based and integrates
cognitive-behavioral, solution-focused theories and many of the principals of RDI©, Relationship Development Intervention.
This program is for children with social-communication
difficulties and diagnoses such as, but not limited to, ASD, Asperger's
Syndrome, Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Sensory Integration
Disorder, and Non-Verbal Learning Disability, or for children
experiencing emotional stressors and anxiety that affects their
social functioning. Commitment to this program is essential to
it's success. Group dynamics are dependent on the development
of relationships over time.
Having a social skill problem can make growing up
a painful and lonely experience. This program is designed to give
these children and youth an opportunity to build skills such as,
communicating and expressing feelings both verbally and non verbally,
making friends, understanding what someone else is feeling and
how to tell, and how to initiate a conversation.
Damselfly's focus is on relationship
skills that further one's ability to make friends and have empathy
for another person. These skills are explored while children are engaged
in the creative process, through group games and projects that
incorporate team building goals. We create a dynamic environment
for kids to have opportunities for developing skills for inter-subjective
relationships that are internalized emotionally. This kind of
environment fosters competance and builds self esteem.
Childhood is a very creative time. The
body and brain are growing and developing, strengths and abilities
are emerging. A sense of identity is formulating and children
are discovering who they are in relation to their environment.
When a child is challenged with social difficulties and sensory
integration dysfunction, often it manifest in self defeating behaviors.
Our philosophy at damselfly is that behavior is a
form of communication. The groups are run by Licensed Creative
Arts Therapist and other licensed professionals with extensive
experience in working with children and families. The groups are
structured as playful and engaging, whether we are working in
dance, drama, art, music, or play. It is through group interaction
that interventions are made in the moment. This gives children
an opportunity to change directions within a context. The children
learn from one another. When one child witnesses another taking
a chance at doing something difficult, like getting up in front
of others, there is a greater chance for them to attempt it as
well. We stress a non-competitive environment and meet the children
where they are at. It is in the experiencing that people understand
and grow.
