“…it is now clear…that anticipation of pleasure is key to all learning. Only the neuro-peptides and other information molecules that produce pleasure in our lives can stimulate and enhance the learning process. All other molecules of emotion diminish learning in deference to survival.    Play is the important work of childhood and the base from which all learning grows. Environments that include pleasure, movement, and creativity are truly the most successful for learning. Learning is naturally a pleasurable experience…”

Candace Pert, Ph.D.

Dr. Pert is an internationally recognized pharmacologist who has published over 250 scientific articles on peptides and their receptors and the role of these neuropeptides in the immune system. Her earliest work as a researcher involved the discovery of opiate receptors and the actions of receptors. She has an international reputation in the field of neuropeptide and receptor pharmacology, and chemical neuroanatomy. Much Dr. Pert’s research is focused on her theories on emotions and mind-body communication. In 1997 she publish her findings on the mind-body connection in her book, Molecules of Emotion, Why You Feel the Way You Feel. Dr. Pert currently holds a Research Professorship in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics at Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, DC.

Dance/Movement Therapy  •  Social Skills  •  RDI© •  Parent Coaching

Our focus at Damselfly Center is relationships. Our programs are action-based to provide optimal learning about oneself in relation to others. We integrate the creative arts therapies with a specialization in dance/movement therapy. We currently offer 2 programs, Amazing Kids: Social Success Program for children ages 6-16. We also have a parent coaching program for children with ASD based in RDI©, as well as a parent coaching program for neurotypical children based in Parent as Coach©.

RDI© Relationship Development Intervention is a a parent-based clinical treatment program where parents learn the tools to effectively teach Dynamic Intelligence skills and motivation to their children with ASD. RDI© is about changing neurology: a way for people on the spectrum to become flexible thinkers and creative problem solvers who enjoy the challenges of change and who have desire to expand their world

Parent as Coach: Helping your child build a life of confidence, courage and compassion by Diana Haskins guides parents to build a trusting relationship that inspire children.

Our vision at damselfly is to create an space where people can explore their creativity, realize their potential, and experience a sense of belonging in an environment that supports awareness. Our theoretical framework is a body-based humanistic approach that uses a solution-focused brief therapy perspective that supports cognitive-developmental principles. We use the arts to engage kids from a multi-sensory and multi-dimensional perspective. The creative process is the catalyst to uncovering the potential in an individual. We help individuals find synchrony and co-regulate with each in order to build stronger connections.
